GLOBAL AND RURAL

Both Global and Rural health are high on the medical student agenda.

Through its association with the International Federation of Medical Student Associations' (IFMSA), AMSA offers Australian students the chance to attend IFMSA General Assemblies to discuss pertinent global health issues. Senior students are also able to use the IFMSA Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) network to access overseas exchanges and electives.

AMSA Global Health Committee (AGH) is AMSA's chief representative body for international health, and is comprised of an AGH representative from each medical school's Global Health Group (GHG). On the ground, Global Health Groups facilitate international health projects and advocacy activities.

AMSA recognises its place in a coalition of international students and also supports a delegation to the Asian Medical Students' Association Conference (AMSC) every year.

AMSA acknowledges the unique position of rural medicine within the Australian healthcare system and works with many external organisations such as the National Rural Health Students' Network (NRHSN) and the Australian Medical Association's Rural Medical Committee and Taskforce on Indigenous Health.  AMSA runs the National Rural Leadership Development Seminar (NRLDS), Rural Electives Bursaries and Indigenous Health Essay Competitions with the NRHSN.

AMSA is continuing to collate information about electives with the aim of making rural and international elective placements easier to organise and more accesible to Australia's medical students. We will soon be calling upon you to submit information about your experiences with electives, so stay tuned for the launch of the database!

Indigenous Students' Engagement Program (ISEP)

Run by the Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA), the aim of the Indigenous Students' Engagement Program (ISEP is to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with additional educational experiences and opportunities to engage in AMSA activities.  It is hoped that these opportunities will enhance the student experience whilst also providing opportunities for students to enhance their medical education through extra-curricular activities encompassing academic, leadership and clinical opportunities.

Stay tuned for further information.
