a little about convention 2006 AMSA Convention brings together over 800 medical students from the 15 medical schools of Australia, as well as international delegates from neighboring countries. In 2006, Convention will be held in Perth, Western Australia, from Sunday 9th July until the morning of Sunday 16th July. Places are strictly limited. Please check our website regularly for updates to the programme of AMSA Convention 2006. Academic Programme - Expand Your Horizons The Academic Programme looks to the future of medicine with its theme in 2006 - "Expand Your Horizons". All academic sessions will be held in the Sheraton Hotel overlooking the Swan River, in the heart of Perth's CBD. Some of the world's most advanced clinical practices and research will be discussed - stem cell research, infectious diseases at a global level, telemedicine, hypnosis as anaesthesia, disaster medicine and much more. We welcome two of Australia's Nobel Prize winners as our keynote speakers, Professor Barry J. Marshall (2005) and Dr Peter Doherty (1996). We also welcome international guest Mr Rafat Ansari of NASA. Visit the academic section for further details on our academic programme.
Workshops Delegates can select from a range of workshops to participate in each afternoon, including burns care, surgical emergency, aboriginal health, financial planning, nutritional medicine and many others. Field trips around Perth will also be available to delegates. Further details on the range of workshops available at AMSA Convention are available under the academic section.
Intervarsity Competitions AMSA Convention is a time for the medical schools of Australia to battle it out in the annual medical school competitions - the Annual Debating Series, Sports Day, Emergency Challenge and the Cascade Cup and Pipps Cup. These events are always favourites of the conventioneers. Info for medical schools on forming their teams is available in the arena section of the website.
Social Programme - From Dusk til Dawn The social programme will showcase the best locations Perth and Fremantle has to offer. 7 nights of insane parties, where every night has its own theme. In the age-old Convention tradition, when it comes to costumes - "less is more"! Visit the Social section of the Convention website for more info on the crackerjack week of action at AMSA Convention 2006.
Accommodation Accommodation at AMSA Convention in Perth is included in the full registration price. Joining all the delegates of Convention in staying at the accommodation is a fantastic part of the week, and makes for a great week in Perth!
Welfare Officers and Graduate Delegates AMSA Convention is open to all medical students and medical professionals who wish to attend. Recently graduated doctors are encouraged to spend a small period of the week (ie: one day) as a welfare officer. This important position ensures the safety of delegates and also provides the perfect excuse to experience the wonders of Convention once more.
