International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA) General Assembly
Think of it as a student version of the UN General Assembly. People from all over the world, different cultures, different languages, different clothes all coming together to discuss something which they are all passionate about: equality in health Over 7 days, resolutions are passed, motions are carried, deals are done which help thousands of the most disadvantaged all over the world. This and a whole lot more is the IFMSA General Assembly.
So what is the IFMSA? The IFMSA remains the world’s largest student organisation, dedicated to the promotion of healthcare and health education across the world. Consisting of over 90 member nations, encompassing most of the globe, the IFMSA through its wide reaching influence work in conjunction with a number of UN organisations (WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF) to help facilitate health projects and work on the ground in these areas. Every year thousands of students cross the globe to participate in IFMSA related health projects. As well as globetrotting, the IFMSA has a lot of projects which can as easily be done at your local uni!. Educational programs are often arranged by the IFMSA throughout its member countries at university health groups in such issues as AIDS, TB as well as dealing with issues on medical education, refugees, rights and peace!
And what about the GA? The General Assembly is held in March and August each year. As described above, it is the forum for medical students to exchange ideas, projects and present new findings from their country. It sounds like a lot of work, which it is, but at night everyone lets their hair down with a fantastic social program which lets everyone unwind. All in all it’s a great occasion to meet people from all over the world who share the same passion and concerns about health on a global scale.
How can I get involved?Easy! Just mail the international officer at international@amsa.org.au and we’ll take it from there! Also, check out our GA website at www.mm2007.org. If you want to check out the IFMSA website, you’ll find it at www.ifmsa.org.
Mission Statement of the IFMSA “To offer future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues.
