SCOPE

Frequently asked questions about IFMSA Exchanges, more information can be found at http://www.IFMSA.net/public

Who can go?

Clinical or preclinical students at any university in Australia are eligible for IFMSA exchanges.

How can I organise an IFMSA exchange?

You first need to decide where you want to go. For information about each country, city and hospital involved and their specific exchange conditions go to http://www.IFMSA.net/public

You next have to contact your local exchange officer who coordinates the IFMSA electives at your medical school. They are the:

At present there are no other IFMSA active medical schools. We are trying hard to establish one in every university. So your support would be much appreciated.
A limited number of unilateral positions are also available from any medical school in Australia. For these contact the National Exchange Officer (NEO).

How much will it cost?

Your airfare plus another fee charged by your local exchange team. This fee is used to support incoming students and varies from $500 to $1000. This covers most of your costs including accommodation and the hard work local exchange team volunteers do to ensure you enjoy a good elective. They even help you do the paper work! Unilateral exchange fees are specified in each countries exchange conditions under http://www.IFMSA.net/public.

How does selection work

Most applicants will be accommodated. Talk to your LEO about how selection occurs.

How long does the application take?

It is best to apply at least 6 months before your elective term. Your local exchange team will show you how to fill out your details on line and tell you what paperwork may be required by your overseas contacts. Confirmation is usually 2 months before departure.

The best way to guarantee an IFMSA elective placement is to get involved yourself as first preference is given to those already involved. Talk to us if you think you can help welcome a student in any way. It's a great way to meet people and learn first hand about the meaning of global health.
