Canberran Medical Student Receives National Honour

David Corbet, a final year medical student from the Australian National University (ANU) has been awarded the inaugural Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) National Student Award.
The AMSANational Student Award was created to allow medical students to publicly acknowledge the dedication and contribution of their peers on a national stage.
David’s achievements include being:
- Past president of the ANU’s rural health club.
- A student representative to the Australian Medical Association of the ACT.
- A founding tutor of the Migrant Resources Centre computer classes – a project which teaches computer skills to newly arrived refugees.
- The coordinator of his medical school’s effort to sponsor refugee student scholarships.
- Recipient of the Welch Allen award for clinical skills after designing an online clinical skills tutorial site for the medical school.
- A Performer at an international level for an aerial dance company.
- Awarded an international jury prize for a short dance film in 2009.
In addition to this long list of achievements, David has maintained a fine academic record and is highly regarded by his peers.
David has a son, and another child on the way.
AMSA President Ross Roberts-Thomson said that David’s passion for medicine and for community service is inspiring, and made his nomination stand out from the pack.
“The AMSA National Council was particularly impressed with the diversity of David’s community and medical involvement, especially his work with refugees and philanthropic pursuits,” he said.
