Health reform announcement to improve medical education in Australia
The Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) says today's announcement that the Federal Government will be funding 60% of hospital services, including clinical training, is a giant leap in the right direction.
President of AMSA Ross Roberts-Thomson said given the Commonwealth already funds university medical places, it makes sense for them to be more involved in the funding and organisation of medical education in hospitals and other settings.
"By increasing Commonwealth involvement, the Government is taking responsibility for the entire continuum of medical education and training. This decision is a move towards ending the blame game and buck-passing on medical education and training in Australia and the resulting increased accountability will benefit the public.
"To the Government's credit, there has been a significant increase in the number of medical students in Australia in recent times. What is required now is a firm commitment to maintain Australia's high quality medical training and provide enough advanced training places in light of the vast number of students coming through.
"AMSA see this announcement as having huge potential to further increase the quality of Australia's world-class medical education system," said Mr Roberts-Thomson.
