Climate change, driven primarily by the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels, has been described by The Lancet as the “greatest global health threat of the 21st century”. Since 2015, global banks have invested over $1.9 trillion in fossil fuels. What few of us realise is that much of this money came from individuals like us, or can be influenced by us. We have the ability to reduce the amount of fossil fuels burned by removing our own money from investments in fossil fuels (through banks and super funds) and by influencing institutions that we are part of (such as universities). As future doctors, we have a responsibility to protect the health of our patients by addressing climate change, and divestment is a great place to start. See our AMSA Code Green Divestment Guide below.
