Conflict of interest study recruitment

A collaborative year-long research project conducted between AMSA MedEd and the Charles Perkins Centre

What is this project about: 

This research project aims to assess the conflict of interest policies across all Australian Medical Schools and the extent to which these policies adequately manage conflict of interests with the pharmaceutical and medical decide industries. There has only been 1 study conducted in this area in Australia, which was published 8 years ago and only included 20 universities. There are currently 22 universities and an updated version of this study is required.

We are looking for: 

  • 3 student investigators


  • Medical student in Australia (required)

  • Some research experience (strongly preferred)

  • At least a 2rd year undergraduate medicine or 1st year postgraduate medicine (preferred) 

Ideal candidate will: 

Be passionate about research, especially regarding conflict of interest policies in the medical education system in Australia. Understands and may have experience in tertiary level research, working in teams, time management and meeting deadlines. 

Team structure: 

Preshita Pande is a 5th year undergraduate student who will be a lead investigator of this project. Travis Lines, AMSA Policy Officer, is also a co-lead author. We are recruiting 3 additional students to be their team members to assist with data collection, analysis and write-up. There will be four researchers from the Charles Perkins Centre involved in overseeing the project including Alice Fabbri, Lisa Bero, Lisa Parker and Barbara Mintzes. Logistical management and oversight will also be provided by AMSA MedEd chair, Anna Kwok. 

Primary tasks: 

  • Collection of publicly available data on conflict of interest policies at medical universities across Australia

  • Development of a scorecard

  • Piloting of scorecard application to a university

  • Assist in ensuring independent scoring of all universities 

  • Write-up to be divided amongst primary authors (primary authors tbc), published, and used for AMSA’s advocacy purposes 


  • Regular meetings with student investigators & once monthly meetings with full team 

  • Assist with data interpretation

  • Formation of analysis and report

  • Assist with formal publication of results 

Overall goals of 2020: 

Complete the conflict of interest policy project and publish internally or externally 

Time commitment: 

  • 2-3 hours a week, 5-7 hours a week in busy periods

  • Applicants should note this project will run to the end of 2020

  • Understanding of formal research, including data collection, analysis and write-up
